ARTIST RESIDENCY

Beginning in 2025, the Foundation will offer artist residencies at Jackson's home and workspace in Savannah, Georgia. The SFJF residencies are intentionally designed for artistic exploration, experimentation, and reflection. The mission of the Foundation is to provide artist residencies to emerging and mid-career artists, particularly underrepresented artists from the South where fewer opportunities exist for residencies. We will consider artists in a broad range of media and practices, reflecting the diversity of artist and founder Suzanne Jackson's decades-long explorations in the visual arts, poetry, theatre, dance and beyond.

In order to support the widest possible community of artists, all SFJF residencies are fully-funded and include individual living accommodations and dedicated studio space. Selected artists will have the opportunity to engage in their practice with complete freedom. There are no residency fees and every artist receives a stipend to cover travel, materials, and food.

RESIDENCE & GARDEN

The SFJF residencies offer artists a retreat within the vibrant city of Savannah. The rambling Victorian house and studio features a verdant tropical garden that offers tranquil outdoor space for gathering, working, and contemplation. Surrounded by the rich spiritual ambience reflecting decades of Jackson’s creative practice and life, residents are granted undisturbed time and space for exploration, self-discovery, and contemplation.

HISTORY

The Suzanne Fitzallen Jackson home and studio lies in the Historic Savannah Streetcar District and the Starland Metropolitan Arts District.

The historic property is listed at the state level as a contributing resource to the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District for its significance in the areas of architecture, community planning and development, commerce, African American heritage, transportation, and landscape architecture.

The property includes sections of the historic Savannah Streetcar line, with lines of the tracks still visible in the gardens, which are a Certified Wildlife Habitat designated by the National Wildlife Federation.

COMMUNITY

Resident artists will have abundant opportunities to connect with Savannah’s thriving arts community, attend local gallery openings and programs, and experience the city’s museums. Located in the Starland Metropolitan Arts District, residents will enjoy easy access on foot or bike to many of the city's cultural attractions, shops, restaurants, and art supply stores.
